Guglielmo Marconi is a world famous person who made his significant contribution to the development of radio and wireless communication.
Although his family was rich and had many high-powered connections he never had any kind of university degree.
However even as a boy he was seriously interested in physical and electrical science and often conducted laboratory experiments trying to send wireless signal over long distances.
He was born in Italy in 1874.
So in 1896 he got the world's first patent for a system of wireless telegraphy and soon formed his own company.
The years following his first achievements were marked with evident success: he established wireless communication between France and England, erected permanent wireless station at different places in England and took his famous patent for "tuned telegraphy".
As a result during his life he received plenty of international awards and honors, among them the Nobel prize in Physics which in 1909 he shared with Professor Karl Braun.
Then between 1902 and 1912 Marconi patented several new inventions including magnetic detector, horizontal directional aerial and timed spark system for generating continuous waves.
Marconi's range of interests was really wide and included beam system for long distance communication, propagation characteristics of short waves and radar principles.

In spite of the fact that he was not any kind of scientist, or even much of an inventor and did not really make any fundamental discoveries, he was the first person in history who launched absolutely new science-based industry -wireless communication- and thus really changed the world.
